GURWIN LOBBY RENOVATIONS & ADMISSION SUITE

LOCATION: COMMACK, NY
SIZE:  VARIOUS PROJECTS

Gurwin Healthcare System is an award-winning leader in elder care, providing exceptional services to the growing aging population on Long Island. Its facilities offer a comprehensive range of care, including assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, dementia care, adult day care, independent living, and dialysis. TPD Architecture was commissioned to reimagine the existing lobby and transform it into a distinctive, welcoming environment that creates a lasting first impression for residents and visitors alike. Developed in close collaboration with the Board of Directors, the design aims to introduce a sophisticated, hospitality-inspired atmosphere while enhancing the overall resident and visitor experience.

As part of the transformation, a new Admissions Suite will provide prospective residents and their families with a warm, inviting, and sophisticated setting. A grand entrance leads into a richly layered waiting area, where thoughtfully selected materials, textures, and lighting create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Carefully considered flooring transitions and architectural details add depth and definition while reinforcing the suite's refined, residential character.

Throughout the lobby, rich textures, sophisticated colors, and a combination of light and medium-toned woods breathe new life into the existing curved glass ceiling and exposed brick walls. A serene palette of blues, beiges, and subtle cognac accents establishes a contemporary yet comforting environment that encourages social interaction and relaxation. Key design features include a curved, transparent room divider that subtly defines the space while maintaining visual openness, and a centrally located fireplace that serves as a focal point within the main lounge area. Intimate seating vignettes are anchored by plush carpet inlays, while oversized, vibrantly colored silk-like pendant fixtures introduce warmth and character to the lounge areas. Together, these elements create an inviting, hospitality-inspired destination where residents, families, and visitors can gather, connect, and feel at home.
